Editorial Review

Durock's Yellow Jacket takes an unusual approach to switch design: rather than making both housing halves from the same material, it pairs a Nylon top housing with a UHMWPE bottom housing. This split-material design creates a bottom-out experience that is distinctly cushioned compared to a traditional POM or Nylon switch, since UHMWPE absorbs impact differently and creates a softer landing at full travel.

The cushioned bottom-out is the Yellow Jacket's defining characteristic. Typists who bottom out on every keypress — which is most people — will notice an immediate difference compared to standard switches. The impact is softer, quieter at the bottom-out point, and produces less finger fatigue over long typing sessions. This is not a silenced switch, but it is a gentler linear than its spring weight suggests.

Sound profile is deep and thocky with a soft landing note at bottom-out. The UHMWPE bottom housing absorbs some of the bottom-out clack, creating a two-stage sound: a brief clack as the stem enters the travel zone, then a muted thud at the end. In builds with good dampening, this creates a particularly pleasing acoustic profile.

At 62g actuation, Yellow Jackets require deliberate keypresses, making them less suitable for ultralight gaming but excellent for all-day typing. The force curve is linear and predictable, with no surprises between top and bottom of travel. The POM stem ensures smooth travel through the Nylon top housing.

Lubing Yellow Jackets transforms them as it does most budget linears. Apply 205g0 to the POM stem rails and a touch to the spring. The UHMWPE bottom housing does not need additional lubing — its inherently low friction requires only what transfers naturally from the lubed stem. Films are optional but improve sound consistency if you are building for acoustic performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Durock Yellow Jackets unique?
The split-material housing — Nylon top and UHMWPE bottom — creates a bottom-out experience that is softer and more cushioned than single-material switches. The UHMWPE bottom absorbs impact differently, reducing the sharp clack at full travel. No other widely available budget linear uses this exact housing combination, making Yellow Jackets genuinely distinctive.
Do Durock Yellow Jackets need switch films?
Films are optional. The housing tolerances are reasonable and stem wobble is minimal. For competitive builds focused on sound, films will improve consistency. For daily use builds, lubing without films produces a perfectly acceptable result. Yellow Jackets are more forgiving than some switches in terms of how much films affect the final outcome.
How do Yellow Jackets compare to standard Durock switches?
Compared to Durock L7 (full POM construction), Yellow Jackets have a softer bottom-out due to the UHMWPE bottom housing but similar POM stem travel characteristics. L7s have a more traditional "solid" bottom-out while Yellow Jackets have a cushioned landing. Both lube well and produce thocky sound profiles, with Yellow Jackets trending slightly softer overall.
