1. Why Lube Switches at All
Every mechanical switch has some amount of "scratch" — friction between the stem and the housing rails as the stem travels up and down. Even premium switches have some manufacturing tolerance variance that produces a slightly rough or inconsistent keystroke. Lubing coats these contact points in a thin film that eliminates friction, resulting in a keystroke that feels smoother, sounds deeper and less scratchy, and — for linears especially — becomes noticeably quieter.
It's not cosmetic. A well-lubed switch is a measurably different experience from the same switch stock. Community blind tests consistently show that lubing is more perceptible than switching between similarly-specced switch models. If you only do one mod to your keyboard, this is the one with the best return.
Even premium switches like Boba U4T or Holy Panda X benefit from lubing. Manufacturing tolerance means every unit has some scratch — lube is not a fix for a "bad" switch, it's a universal upgrade.
2. Which Lube for Which Switch Type
Using the wrong lube — or lubing the wrong part of a switch — is the most common way a lube job goes wrong. The rule of thumb: linears get thick lube everywhere, tactiles get thin lube everywhere except the legs, and clickies mostly get left alone.

The tactile "legs" are the two small nubs near the bottom of the stem that catch on the housing to create the bump. Lube on the legs acts as a lubricant on the exact surface producing the tactile feel — it will smooth out or completely erase the bump. Keep lube off the legs entirely, even if it means a slightly less thorough job elsewhere on the stem.
3. Tools You Need
You can lube switches with almost nothing, or you can build out a full station. Here's what each tier gets you:
- Minimum viable kit: A switch opener (or a flathead screwdriver and patience), a small watercolor brush (size 0 or 00), and a pot of lube. Total cost: under $15.
- Comfortable kit: Add a switch opener tray (holds 10-20 switches open at once so you're not fighting clips one at a time), and a switch puller for pulling switches off the board. Adds ~$15-20.
- Full station: A dedicated lube station (like the Kelowna or KBDfans station) holds 12-16 switch housings open in a jig, letting you brush a whole batch without reassembling between switches. Cuts total lubing time by more than half. ~$15-20.
Brush size matters more than people expect. A brush that's too large deposits too much lube per stroke and makes it hard to control thickness — a size 0 or 00 brush gives you the control needed for a thin, even coat.
4. Step-by-Step Lubing Process
Press the two small clips on the sides of the bottom housing (or use a switch opener tool) and separate the top housing from the bottom. Set the top housing, stem, spring, and bottom housing aside separately — you'll lube each piece individually.
Dip the brush lightly — you want a thin film on the bristles, not a visible glob — and run it along the two vertical rails inside the bottom housing where the stem slides. One or two light passes is enough. If you see lube pooling, you've used too much; wipe the excess off with the dry side of the brush.
Lube the two sides of the stem that contact the rails, plus the bottom of the stem where it will contact the housing floor at bottom-out. For tactiles, stop well short of the legs — many builders lube the stem top-down and simply stop the brush stroke before reaching the leg area.
A very light coat on the inside of the top housing where the stem's top slider contacts it. This is the easiest spot to over-lube because it's a small surface — use minimal product here.
Drop the lubed spring back into the bottom housing, insert the stem, and snap the top housing back on until the clips click into place. Test the switch by pressing it a few times — it should feel smooth and silent with no grinding or scratchy resistance.
5. Lubing Springs (Bag Method)
Springs are responsible for a specific noise called "spring ping" — a metallic ringing sound, especially noticeable on linear switches with lighter springs. Lubing springs individually with a brush is slow and imprecise. The community-standard shortcut is the bag lube method:
- Remove all springs from the switches you're lubing and place them in a sealable plastic bag
- Add a small amount of thin lube (Krytox 105 oil works best; 205g0 grease also works but is thicker)
- Seal the bag and shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds
- Pour the springs onto a paper towel to remove excess lube before reinstalling
This coats all the springs evenly in under a minute total, versus 30+ minutes of individual brushing. It's one of the best time-saving techniques in the entire lubing process.
6. Lube Stations — Worth It?
A lube station is a jig with slots that hold switch bottom housings open, letting you brush a whole batch of 12-16 switches in sequence without reassembling between each one. For a single build, a station saves meaningful time — what takes 60-90 minutes with individual switch handling drops to 30-40 minutes with a station.
Whether it's worth the ~$15-20 cost comes down to how many boards you plan to build. If this is a one-time build, a station is a nice-to-have but not essential. If you expect to build more than one keyboard — which, if you're reading this guide, is extremely likely — it pays for itself on the second build alone in time saved.

8. Factory Pre-Lubed Switches
Some switches now ship factory pre-lubed, including Gateron Oil Kings and Gateron Yellow Pro. These are lubed at the factory with a proprietary formula applied more evenly (via machine) than most hobbyists can achieve by hand. Opening these switches to add more lube risks over-lubing an already well-lubed unit.
Before committing to relube an entire set of factory-lubed switches, test 3-5 units first. If they already feel smooth and consistent, leave them alone — you're more likely to make them worse than better. If you notice inconsistency between units (common on any mass-produced switch), a light supplemental lube on just the inconsistent ones is usually enough.
